The role of a NSW Justice of the Peace

And the benefits you gain as a JP!

What a JP contributes to the community

Make ordinary into ex·traor·di·nar·y

A NSW JP strengthens the legal process by acting as an independent, trusted witness. This helps prevent fraud, protects vulnerable people and ensures documents are completed correctly so they hold up when submitted to government agencies, courts or employers.

Key community benefits include:

  • Free access to essential legal witnessing - no cost barrier for people who need documents witnessed or certified
  • Local availability - especially in regional towns where legal services may be limited
  • Support for people who struggle with paperwork - JP's help ensure forms are signed in the right places, dated correctly and compliant with NSW requirements
  • Reduces pressure on Police Stations, Courts and Solicitors. JP's handle routine witnessing so those services can focus on more complex matters

Jack Mawrey JP

I had the pleasure of being sworn in as a Justice of the Peace in the 1960's Applications for the commission of Justice of the Peace were different in those times.

I find that being a member of the New South Wales Justices Association Inc., very valuable, and they supply ongoing  training.

I find I enjoyed serving on the Community Justice Desk, which I would highly recommend to fellow JP's

Diane Feenan JP

Being a NSW Justice of the Peace and member of the NSW Justice Association Inc. has been a very rewarding experience, as I am part of a statewide team and a wonderful JP family. I love being a community JP because it makes the legal documentation process easier and more accessible which in turn makes a tangible difference in people's lives.

Elaine Carter JP

I became a JP in 1981 in the accountancy field where I worked for 24 yrs.
When I retired and moved to the central coast I decided to continue my knowledge of JP's and become a member of the NSW JA in 2003. When the branch President spoke about opening a branch close to me, He was very obliging so we went ahead with the idea.
I am so pleased that we did this as we are now in the library, where everyone is very helpful and people are quiet and kind to all of us that are on the desk.

Maureen Brownlee JP

Being a JP allows me to give back to my community in a practical way.  I appreciate the responsibility that comes with being a JP.  It’s a role built on integrity and trust.

Many people see a JP during a significant life event, and I take pride in helping ensure documents are properly witnessed and signed.  Even small tasks such as certifying a copy of ID can make a big difference to someone.

The New South Wales Justices Association has provided immense educational opportunity enabling me to keep abreast of any updates to policies relevant to the role of a JP.

Anon JP

Engaging with the Community as a JP I truly value my time serving on the NSWJA community desks.
This Ensures I am constantly updated with the latest Department of Communities and Justice advice and the NSWJA guidelines.  In addition to assisting the community, I have the pleasure of meeting a diverse array of people whether they are clients seeking our services or individuals who stop by for a chat.
The JP role allows me to contribute to the community and keeps my mind active and engaged.
Being part of a branch offers the opportunity to discuss and reflect on any 'interesting scenarios' that may arise during our meetings, which I find invaluable.

Rosa Hogg JP

I have had the privilege of serving as a Justice of the Peace for over 46 years, and it continues to be an incredibly rewarding experience. Being able to assist and support members of our community in meaningful ways is something I truly value and take pride in.
Alongside my duties as a JP, I am an active member of the Tuggerah Branch of the NSWJA, where I collaborate with fellow JPs to further support our local community. I also volunteer at Toukley Library every Monday, which provides another wonderful opportunity to engage with and help others.

I am passionate about contributing my time and experience wherever it can make a positive difference, and I welcome any opportunities to do
